The Long-suffering Of God
 
Is part of his character - Exo_34:6; Num_14:18; Psa_86:15; 
Exo 34:6  And Jehovah passed by before him and proclaimed, Jehovah! Jehovah God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 
Num 14:18  Jehovah is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation. 
Psa 86:15  But You, O God, are God full of pity, and gracious, long-suffering, and rich in mercy and truth. 
 
Salvation, the object of - 2Pe_3:15; 
2Pe 3:15  And think of the long-suffering of our Lord as salvation (as our beloved brother Paul also has written to you according to the wisdom given to him 
 
Through Christ's intercession - Luk_13:8; 
Luk 13:8  And answering, he said to him, Lord, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and throw manure. 
 
Should lead to repentance - Rom_2:4; 2Pe_3:9; 
Rom 2:4  Or do you despise the riches of His kindness, and the forbearance and long-suffering, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? 
2Pe 3:9  The Lord is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slowness, but is long-suffering toward us, not purposing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 
 
An encouragement to repent - Joe_2:13; 
Joe 2:13  Yes, tear your heart and not your robes, and turn to Jehovah your God: for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and He pities because of the evil. 
 
Exhibited in forgiving sins - Rom_3:25; 
Rom 3:25  whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness through the passing by of the sins that had taken place before, in the forbearance of God; 
 
EXERCISED TOWARD
 
His people - Isa_30:18; Eze_20:17; 
Isa 30:18  And so Jehovah waits to be gracious to you. And therefore He is exalted, that He may have mercy on you. For Jehovah is a God of judgment; blessed are all those who wait for Him. 
Eze 20:17  But My eye spared them from destroying them, nor did I make an end of them in the wilderness. 
 
The wicked - Rom_9:22; 1Pe_3:20; 
Rom 9:22  What if God, willing to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction; 
1Pe 3:20  to disobeying ones, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared (in which a few, that is, eight souls were saved through water); 
 
Plead in prayer - Jer_15:15; 
Jer 15:15  O Jehovah, You know; remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on those who seek to hurt me. Do not take me away in Your long-suffering; know that for Your sake I have suffered rebuke. 
 
Limits set to - Gen_6:3; Jer_44:22; 
Gen 6:3  And Jehovah said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, in his erring; he is flesh. Yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. 
Jer 44:22  Yea, so that Jehovah could no longer hold back because of the evil of your doings, because of the abominations which you have committed! So your land is a waste, and a wonder, and a curse, without anyone in it, as it is today. 
 
THE WICKED
 
Abuse - Ecc_8:11; Mat_24:48; Mat_24:49; 
Ecc 8:11  Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. 
Mat 24:48  But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My Lord delays His coming, 
Mat 24:49  and shall begin to strike his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken, 
 
Despise - Rom_2:4; 
Rom 2:4  Or do you despise the riches of His kindness, and the forbearance and long-suffering, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? 
 
Punished for despising - Neh_9:30; Mat_24:48-51; Rom_2:5; 
Neh 9:30  And many years You had patience with them, and testified against them by Your Spirit, by Your prophets, but they would not give ear. And You gave them into the hand of the people of the lands. 
Mat 24:48  But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My Lord delays His coming, 
49  and shall begin to strike his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken, 
50  the Lord of that servant shall come in a day when he does not look for Him, and in an hour which he does not know. 
51  And He shall cut him apart and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
 
Rom 2:5  But according to your hardness and your impenitent heart, do you treasure up wrath for yourself in a day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

12  And when he was in affliction, he sought Jehovah his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers.

Psa 78:38  But He, full of pity, forgave their iniquity, and did not destroy them; yea, many times He turned His anger away, and did not stir up all His wrath. 
Isa 48:9  For My name's sake I will put off My anger, and for My praise I will hold back for you, that I do not cut you off. 
 
Jerusalem - Mat_23:37; 
Mat 23:37  O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to her, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not! 
 
Paul - 1Ti_1:16; 
1Ti 1:16  But for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all long-suffering, as a pattern to those being about to believe on Him to life everlasting.
